HIGH ANTIOXIDANT POMEGRANATE

An Ancient Superfruit

The pomegranate (Punica Granatum) is one of the oldest known fruits, and is thought to originate from Persia. Many ancient writings from regions surrounding Turkey, Iran and Northern India mention the versatile food as an important part of their diet and culture.

Pomegranates are now cultivated worldwide, and celebrated for their vast array of health benefits. The nutrient dense food is a potent source of antioxidants and flavonoids, which have increasingly been recognised for their array of health-promoting properties.

There are a few derivative ingredients extracted from several parts of the pomegranate fruit, including from the skin, from the seeds and of course from the sweet and slightly tart pulp from the arils, that is used to produce a range of juices, concentrates and powders.

Pomegranates play an important role in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where the fruit is a symbol of health and eternal life. The seeds and juice are often used as a tonic for the heart, throat and eyes, and thought to help ward off intestinal parasites.

Some of the Benefits of Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)

As well as providing a unique and much sought after flavour to food and beverages,  the pomegranate juice boasts a range of health benefits, being rich in many important micronutrients, antioxidants and flavonoids.

Pomegranate and their Phytonutrients

Pomegranates are recognized as one of the powerful antioxidant sources available today. A glass of pomegranate juice is thought to contain more antioxidants than blueberries, cranberries and green tea. The juice is also rich in Vitamins A, C and E, all of which show antioxidant characteristics, and are also involved in maintaining a healthy immune system and promoting ocular health.

Pomegranates also contain polyphenols such as ellagic acid as well as a group of ellagitannins that includes Punicalagins. Ellagic acid is known to help protect cells from oxidation damage from free radicals. Punicalagins, which are found in particularly high concentrations in the seeds and skin of the pomegranate fruit, although it is also present in the juice, is believed to be the main contributor to Pomegranate’s exceptional antioxidant activity. The advantage of Punicalagins is that not only are they highly soluble in water, they have also been found to be highly bioavailable. In addition to this, Punicalagins have been found to act as an inhibitor to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, and as such is thought to help improve conditions as diverse as glaucoma to mountain sickness and gastric ulcers.

A Rich Source of Flavonoids

The bright red-pink colour of the pomegranate arils and juice can be attributed to the high flavonoid content, particularly the sub class called anthocyanins. Delphinidin and cyanidin are types of anthocyanins found in pomegranates, and they both present a number of health benefits. They are thought to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help reduce symptoms of arthritis and auto immune disorders and they are believed to play a role in defending against cancer-causing free radicals and blocking tumor growth, although more research is needed in this area.

A Heart Friendly Superfruit

Pomegranates have long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat and prevent issues with the heart and circulatory systems. This has lead to a number of scientific studies aimed at measuring the potential benefits of the superfruit. Preliminary results do show some potential. It is suggested that the regular consumption of pomegranate juice may help to reduce heart disease risk factors. The juice is thought to reduce systolic blood pressure and decrease cholesterol build up. This may improve the blood flow to the heart and reduce the risk of a blockage.

Healing With Vitamin K

Pomegranate juice is a good source of Vitamin K, an important micronutrient used in a number of different bodily functions. Vitamin K is crucial to help build certain proteins that play a role in blood clotting and wound healing. It also plays a key role in helping to maintain healthy bones and connective tissue, particularly useful for athletes, and an ageing population.

Anti Bacterial Properties

The juice of the pomegranate is thought to contain certain enzymes that have anti-bacterial properties, helping to keep the body free of harmful bacteria and parasites. The enzymes may also play a role in maintaining a healthy gastro intestinal tract, reducing symptoms of bloating and mal-absorption of nutrients.
