Some further detail on each product format and their possible applications in the Food, Beverage, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical sectors is provided below.

Freeze Dried Boysenberry Powder

Once the boysenberries are harvested in New Zealand they are frozen ready for secondary processing. Freeze Drying is one of the best ways of drying these berries; because the anthocyanins and other polyphenols in the Boysenberries are heat sensitive, by drying the fruit at low temperatures during the freeze drying process, there is only minimal loss in antioxidants and nutrition, making the freeze dried powder highly functional and ideal for nutraceutical and powder supplement applications, as well as any applications for which antioxidant are desirable. Since this powder has no ingredients added, and has nothing removed other than the water, it is a pure natural powder with a good fiber content. Freeze Dried Boysenberry Powder is shelf stable and can be stored at ambient temperature.

Whole Freeze Dried Boysenberries

Superfood Ingredient’s Whole Freeze Dried Boysenberries are great as snacks by themselves, or dipped in chocolate, or as a good addition to cereals, cereal bars, baked goods and desserts.

Boysenberry Juice Powder

Our Boysenberry Juice Powder in an ideal format for beverage applications, or superfruit mixes intended for adding to water, as this product presents good solubility in water. The juice of the berry is extracted and then spray dried with the help of a drying aid (maltodextrin). Although this powder does not present the same levels of antioxidants as the freeze dried boysenberry powder, it does still provide the flavour and colour of boysenberries, along with many of the nutritional benefits. Boysenberry Juice Powder is shelf stable and can be stored at ambient temperature.

Boysenberry Puree and Juice Concentrate

Our Boysenberry Puree and Juice Concentrate is made by extracting the juice of New Zealand harvested boysenberries, and in the case of the concentrate, concentrating this to a brix of 55 or 65. Once concentrated the resulting deep purple liquid is frozen, ready to be used in the food and beverage industry for making high antioxidant juices, ice-creams, yoghuts and desserts. This product provides all of the goodness, flavour and colour that you would wish from a superfruit without any other ingredients added.

SUPERFOOD INGREDIENTS boysenberry harvesting and production

A Health Promoting Hybrid Berry

Boysenberries (Rubus ursinus × idaeus) are classed as a hybrid berry, originally produced by the combination of the humble raspberry, blackberry and loganberry. These large bramble berries are thought to originate from the USA in the early twentieth century, where they still grow on low trailing vines throughout the western states. The largest producer however is now New Zealand, from where the berries are exported and enjoyed worldwide.

The flavour of the deep purple boysenberry is sometimes described as a combination between the sweetness of raspberries, with slightly tart undertones of blackberries. As well as their unique flavour, boysenberries are celebrated for their wide range of health benefits, and for their versatility. Many producers choose to process the superfruit into jams, syrups, pies, ice-creams and even wines.

Boysenberries were created in the 1920’s during the great depression by Swedish immigrant Rudolf Boysen, a horticulturist who lived in California. He crossed the seeds of the raspberry, blackberry and loganberry, and later turned the fruit over for commercial development to farmer Walter Knott’s Berry Farm

Preserving the Natural Goodness

Although boysenberries are marvelous when fresh, the growing season is short and the fruits are highly perishable after picking. With this in mind, Superfood Ingredients provides Boysenberry products that can be stored for longer periods, whilst maintaining the great taste and health benefits. Our Freeze Dried Boysenberry Powder is dried at low temperatures, preserving the natural nutrients. It works well as a health supplement and in cereal bars and smoothie mixes. We also offer a Frozen Boysenberry Puree and Juice Concentrate, which can be produced with or without seeds. The puree is ideal for use in ice-creams, yoghurts, smoothies and desserts. All our boysenberry products are produced in New Zealand.
