Some further detail on each product format and their possible applications in the Food, Beverage, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical sectors is provided below.
Organic Freeze Dried Camu Camu Powder
Camu Camu's high content of vitamin C is carefully protected during processing. The Camu Camu Berries are harvested when ripe and are fresh frozen ready for secondary processing. Freeze Drying is one of the best ways of drying the camu camu fruit; because the vitamin C (in the form of ascorbic acid ) natural to camu camu is heat sensitive, by drying the fruit at low temperatures during the freeze drying process, there is only minimal loss of nutrition, making the freeze dried powder highly functional and ideal for nutraceutical and powder supplement applications, as well as any applications for which vitamin C claims need to be made. Freeze Dried Camu Camu Powder is shelf stable and can be stored at ambient temperature.
Organic Raw Camu Camu Powder
Camu Camu fruit has been found to have one of the highest natural levels of Vitamin C of any fruit. In this format our Camu Camu fruit has been only lightly processed, the fruit, harvested from the Peruvian Amazon region, is dried at low temperatures and after removing the pips, the dried fruit is milled into a fine powder that contains all the fibers found naturally in the fruit. In conjunction with the natually high levels of vitamin C, this format provides an ideal powder for addition into raw snacks, baking, beverages or in any application where a high content of fibers and vitamin C is desirable.
Organic Camu Camu Powder Extract
Our Organic and Conventional Camu Camu Powdered Extracts is an ideal format for nutraceitucals, health supplements and for encapsulation in products for which a standardised natural Vitamin C content is desirable. These powder extracts are available in a range of standardised vitamin C levels. The fruit for these powders are either harvested when ripe or whilst still green, depending on the desired taste and ascorbic acid content. The juice of the camu camu fruit is extracted and then spray dried with the help of a drying aid (maltodextrin). The resulting powder is soluble in water, lending itself to liquid applications if required. The Camu Camu Powder Extracts are shelf stable and can be stored at ambient temperature.
Organic Camu Camu Juice Powder
Our Organic and Conventional Camu Camu Juice Powders are an ideal format for beverage applications, or superfruit mixes intended for adding to water, as this product presents good solubility in water. The juice of the fruit is spray dried with the help of a drying aid (maltodextrin). Although this powder does not present the same levels of vitamin C as the freeze dried camu camu powder, it does still provide the flavour and colour of camu camu, along with many of the nutritional benefits. Camu Camu Juice Powder is shelf stable and can be stored at ambient temperature.
Organic Camu Camu Pulp
Our Organic Camu Camu Pulp is made by depulping the freshly harvested camu camu cherries, removing only the seeds, and rapidly freezing the resulting pulp, ready to be used in the food and beverage industry for making high vitamin C juices, ice-creams, yoghurts and desserts. This product provides all of the goodness, flavour and colour that you would wish from a superfruit without any other ingredients added.
SUPERFOOD INGREDIENTS camu camu harvesting and production
Camu Camu as a Functional Ingredient
The Camu Camu Berry has rapidly gained a well deserved spotlight in the food ingredients sector for its remarkable nutritional density, and in particular for presenting the highest levels of Vitamin C of any fruit tested to date, by a wide margin, with results topping in at 56 times the level of vitamin C provided by lemons.
This is significant as it has opened up a whole ray of possibilities in the food and beverage industries since it offers a natural alternative to food preservatives, particularly as a substitute for synthetically produced ascorbic acid, making labels cleaner and more attractive to consumers.
It has also been taken up by the nutraceutical industry as a natural Vitamin C Supplement. This comes with various benefits as it not only provides customers with a wholefood alternative, it may also avoid some of the negative side effects, such stomach upset, that can be experienced from pharmaceutical Vitamin C supplements.
Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) has been valued by communities throughout the Amazon, where it is found to grow naturally in regions spanning Brazil, Peru & Bolivia. It has been used traditionally for a wide number of health benefits such as its capacity to boost vitality, fight off colds and other viral infections and to detoxify the liver.
